To keep Instagram “a positive place for self-expression” the social media network is now making available new tools and controls to make its community a united place.
You can soon disable comments on individual posts – simply tap “Advanced Settings” prior to posting and then select “Turn Off Commenting.” Comments can be turned back on anytime. About the update, CEO Kevin Systrom posted:
“Comments are where the majority of conversation happens on Instagram. While comments are largely positive, they’re not always kind or welcome.”
In addition, Instagram is also giving you the ability to like and respond to comments. Finally, the long-reported option that will let users anonymously submit those in their circle who need support is coming, too.
If someone seems to be struggling – report it – Instagram will connect said person to organizations that can assist. Teams work 24/7 to review the reports and ensure everyone gets help. The National Eating Disorders Association and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline were involved to ensure proper wording and appropriate prompts are enacted.
