Sacai Launches Its First-Ever Handbag Collection
Featuring a lineup of six sophisticated and functional styles.
Japanese label Sacai has revealed its inaugural handbag collection. The founder of the brand, Chitose Abe, has tapped accessories designer and consultant Katie Hillier to help create a total of six different purses. In particular, the collection features a black mink and crocodile shoulder bag reminiscent of a vintage-style coin purse, as well as a canvas and leather tote bag inspired by a camping dry bag. Speaking of her upcoming handbag line, Abe explains: “It’s a new way of holding or using a handbag — and it’s how that can be interpreted in new ways. It’s a hybrid [aesthetic] that is connected to the clothes.”
Hillier, who has previously worked with the likes Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham, also touches on the inspiration behind the designs: “The main focus was to create something from the designs that Chitose gave us … to make these incredible-looking things work on an everyday basis. So it could look like it was not necessarily a bag, but it has to function.”
Priced from €950 EUR (approximately $1,068 USD) and up, part of Sacai’s first handbag collection will be available at Colette beginning October 3. You can expect to shop the entire lineup starting December 1 at select Sacai retailers, such as Bergdorf Goodman and Selfridges.
