CL Wants To "Break America": "I Want To Do It Right"
CL talks her American takeover, being more than a K-pop star and cultural criticism.
CL is known as the “Baddest Female of Asia,” but this year she’s trekked forward in her global takeover with her eyes set on the U.S. The K-pop superstar launched her first North American tour in October in New York City, which is where CNN Style followed her to document her mission to make it in the states.
“Breaking America is serious now. I want to do it and I feel responsible in some kind of way… It’s the complete opposite of Asia. Because you know in Korea it’s, everything like is about yin yang and keeping the balance. There’s a saying in Asia, if you’re too strong you break. But here, I feel like it is about being too strong. I want to see how I could take that yin yang and do it here.”
Close friends Jeremy Scott, Alexander Wang and Luka Sabbat join CL and celebrate her starpower, proving her reach already goes far beyond not just Korea but Asia period. “She’s not just a Korean or an Asian phenomenon,” says Scott. “She really is a global superstar.” CL herself remarks in the above short:
“I don’t think about my skin. When I’m creating I don’t think about the fact that I’m Asian… I think they have a certain way they look at an Asian girl. That was the struggle for me, for the last two years… I’m not a thing, I’m not a doll.”
