Gigi Hadid Responds to Tommy Hilfiger's Body-Shaming Controversy

Why Gigi wore a poncho in a Tommy Hilfiger show: “She’s not quite as thin.”

Two weeks ago Tommy Hilfiger made controversial comments about Gigi Hadid’s body to Yahoo Style‘s Joe Zee. He admitted the model wore an oversized poncho to the Fall 2015 show because “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin.’”

Hadid’s kept quiet until a recent interview with Access Hollywood. The reporter asked her point-blank and she defended the designer:

“I know that when Tommy said it last week, it was in context of a larger story that wasn’t shown in that video. I know that the point of that story was that Tommy was rooting for me, and that regardless of what the stylist of that season said or what he put me in, Tommy wanted me in the show and Tommy was pushing for me and Tommy loved my curves.”

She added: “The next season I wore a bikini on the same runway with the same stylist of the show that had previously put me in a poncho.” Everything’s good between Hilfiger and Hadid but it’s still a sad reminder that skewed body perception is ripe – at least during that show.

Watch her reaction above.
