SZA May Be Quitting Music for Good After Releasing Her Debut Album
“I’m really frustrated, and I’m kind of over it.”
Since SZA made her debut in 2012 with her See.SZA.Run EP, fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of A. The final project in her music trilogy of her S and Z EPs is nearly complete — but this debut album might actually be her last.
In November, the Top Dawg Entertainment singer tweeted — then deleted — that she was quitting music, adding TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson could release her album “if he ever feels like it” and hinting at behind-the-scenes drama. Complex recently sat down with SZA, asking for clarity on what that means for her future. “I’m really frustrated, and I’m kind of over it,” she stated after mentioning she might work on visual or film projects instead. “I have a lot of anxiety and there’s a lot going on in my life,” she added, touching on personal tragedies, like death of family and friends, she’s been dealing with lately.
On her relationship with Punch and TDE, she said “Me and Punch never get along — that’s every day. They call me one of the homies. We’re all different, and that was hard to understand [at first] because they’re tough-love people and hard to read, but I dig it now. I don’t have any issues with my label. My label has been nothing but supportive of everything I’ve wanted to do.”
So is she done for music for good? She stops short of confirming:
“Completing this [album] and these last couple of moments on the clock before this project is done are definitely the most pivotal moments of my life,” she says. “Growing up as a woman, making tough decisions, and sticking by my own shit is necessary. But I definitely…um…” Long pause. “I’m definitely committed to completing this and I think…” Another long pause. “We’ll take it from there.”
