The words “bitch” and “slut” are perhaps thrown around too freely these days, causing unnecessary and sometimes inappropriate judgment. If a woman rejects a man, she is mean and being a difficult “bitch.” If she is agreeable, she is easy and a “slut.” Most ladies will find the lyrics to frequent Kendrick collaborator Anna Wise’s new hit “Bitchslut” awfully relatable. As straightforward as it is, the song addresses the expectations of females in a male-dominated society, calling out the false perceptions that men have about women in public. With ongoing debates within the feminist community to re-appropriate insulting words like “slut” and “bitch” and to transform them into something empowering, Wise’s song may well prove to be a powerful reclamation of identity of these terms. Check out the song in the video above, “self-directed” from director Patti Miller.
