GG Magree Is The "Girl Gang Leader" You Should Be Listening To
The Australian DJ discusses world domination, her clothing line Yeah Pussy, and more.
On the surface, Georgia “GG” Magree might seem like your average DJ, touring the world club circuit and looking flawless while doing it. Upon closer inspection, however, the Sydney native is so much more than that. She has gradually become the voice of a generation simply by being her bad self. Fusing together a blend of hip hop, trap and house party genres, GG is a regular fixture at fashion events, playing for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, adidas and Topshop and supporting some of the biggest names in music such as Pharrell Williams, Azaelia Banks, Wu-Tang Clan, Die Antwoord and Rita Ora.
Beyond the realm of music, the blonde bombshell is a self-described “girl-gang leader” and a vocal advocate for women. As the founder of popular streetwear label, Yeah Pussy, GG consistently expresses female empowerment through provocative garments. Reappropriating the word “pussy” is at the forefront of the line and is part of a stronger mission to make women feel proud. Plain and simple. We recently got a chance to catch up with GG to learn more about what it takes to be a world-class DJ, as well as why she is fiercely driven to inspire other women.
You were named one of Spotify’s “One To Watch” artists in 2016. Can you tell us how it all began?
I’ve developed a tight relationship with Spotify over the years, so I guess they just felt the heat!
Walk us through your musical style and your inspirations. What’s changed since you first began partaking in dance-offs?
I’m a bass baby that likes to make booties pop. Inspirations would be Skrillex, Drake, Bad Gal RiRi, Grandtheft, M.I.A….argh, there are so many. Not much has changed as I still partake in dance-offs.
When you’re not touring with superstar Rita Ora or playing on the international circuit, we’re aware you’re a regular on the fashion stage playing for the likes of Louis Vuitton and adidas. How hard is it to go from one to the other? Any preference?
I like to consider myself a versatile lady. I give the same amount of presence at every gig and I really just do my thing – put a GG spin on every situation.
Speaking of fashion, your Yeah Pussy brand is as strong as your musical presence. How did it all come about?
I have always taken a lil’ posse of babes with me wherever I have played, and it became our mantra. Badass boss bitches who don’t give no fu*ks!
People are scared to use strong terms such as ‘p*ssy’ because it can be taken so far out of context, but ‘Yeah Pussy’ is all about being ballsy and being loud.
In terms of empowering women and creating a strong female presence, why is it important to re-appropriate words such as “p*ssy” as you’ve done for your clothing brand?
People are scared to use strong terms such as ‘p*ssy’ because it can be taken so far out of context, but Yeah Pussy is all about being ballsy and being loud. I really just wanted to create something fun that girls can relate to and be proud of.
So you’re definitely as involved in music as you are in fashion. Where do you negotiate the line between the two?
I try to link everything in together. My brand is just as badass as my music.
Tell us, what’s the secret to your stage presence?
ENERGY. Lots and lots of ENERGY.
You’re a self-described “girl gang leader.” What does that mean to you in your career and on a personal note.
I like girls to fight for girls. Like I said, taking a stand and being badass boss bitches.
And finally…what’s next for GG Magree?
MUSIC, TOURING, YEAH PUSSY AND WORLD DOMINATION!
You can check out GG Magree’s exclusive HYPEBAE playlist above. On why she picked these tracks, GG says, “These are my life activity songs – I play them in my sets, I work out to them, I drive to them, I cook to them…YA feel.”
