Created in the 90’s, the Japanese anime Sailor Moon follows the adventures of a young schoolgirl and her friends as they battle against villains to prevent the destruction of the Solar system. Or at least that is how one might see it at its most basic level. In this short documentary film, VICE follows the stories of Sailor Moon fans and digs deeper into how this anime positively affected the lives of queer kids growing up in the 90’s. Sailor Moon fans, or “moonies,” will tell you that as you learn more about the characters, Sailor Moon has a deeply profound underlying message about LGBT acceptance and being true to yourself.
