Balenciaga Unveils 2016 Pre-Fall Collection
Designed between Alexander Wang’s departure and Demna Gvasalia’s first runway show.
Filled with high collars, boxy silhouettes and refined details, the 2016 pre-fall collection from Balenciaga is supposedly produced by the brand’s internal team. According to a press release, the pieces were designed during the awkward transitional period between the departure of Alexander Wang and the first runway show by Demna Gvasalia. However, Vetements-inspired aesthetics are just barely discernible in the looks. Whether the team was anticipating the new incoming creative director or the inspiration was genuinely subconscious, the incorporation of a hoodie alongside elongated sleeves and kitschy floral graphics seems to prompt an uncanny resemblance. Other standouts in the preview include an oversized aviator jacket with a flipped and branded shearling collar (as seen in Balenciaga’s latest eyewear campaign) and jaw-dropping metallic thigh-high stiletto boots. Whether or not the new collection was truly without direction from the Georgian designer, the new pieces remain to be a remarkable teaser for Demna Gvasalia’s highly anticipated first collection.
