The Dress for Disney's First Latina Princess Is Revealed
‘Project Runway’ alum Layana Aguilar designs a culturally accurate gown for Princess Elena of Avalor.
Disney announced back in 2015 that the studio would be introducing its first-ever Latina princess this summer. Named Princess Elena of Avalor, we now get a glimpse of the gorgeous gown that she will be wearing, designed by Project Runway alum Layana Aguilar. The designer was born and raised in Brazil and quickly became a Project Runway favorite during Season 11, and made a return later on for Season 5 of Project Runway All Stars.
Princess Elena will be making her debut on a Disney Channel series later this summer as the first princess inspired by Latin cultures and folklores. Paying homage to her South American heritage, Aguilar’s design for the princess is both culturally and historically accurate. As seen in the final drawing, the dress is a vibrant red, off-the-shoulder piece with floral prints throughout, which is a first for a Disney princess. Princess Elena will also be making appearances at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort later this year. You can check out the official design below.
