The "El Diablo" Tequila Cocktail Will Spice Up Your Cinco de Mayo

But understand the history behind the holiday first.

Before you go bottoms-up on Cinco de Mayo, it’s important to understand what the holiday is all about. No, it isn’t Mexican Independence Day — that’s September 16. May 5, 1862, was the day General Ignacio Zargoza led 2,000 ill-equipped members of the Mexican army to win the Battle of Pueblo against France during 1861-1867’s the Franco-Mexican War.

With tequila being one of Mexico’s greatest exports — in our opinion, at least — it’s only right to have on-hand in celebration. Below, raise your glass with a cocktail recipe with a spicy jalapeño twist for a kick as invigorating as the victorious troops.

El Diablo

INGREDIENTS
1.5 oz Peligroso Silver tequila
.75 oz lime juice
.5 oz agave nectar
1 jalapeño

DIRECTIONS

  1. Chop jalapeño and muddle a slice.
  2. Add to an ice-filled shaker with all other ingredients.
  3. Shake vigorously.
  4. Strain into a glass of ice.
  5. Garnish with lime.
