This Is What It Takes to Be a Professional Hula Dancer
There is much more to the dance than just swaying your hips.
Contrary to the conventional perception of how easy Hula dance is (girls in grass dresses and flowers in their hair simply swaying their hips), there is much more to the practice. As with every cultural dance across the globe, an authentic Hula dance is only achieved with a display of unique skills and technique acquired through years of disciplined training and hard work, as well as a deep understanding of the origins of the dance. Every year, professional Hula dancers compete in the Merrie Monarch Festival, the world’s most prestigious Hula competition and the highest honor a hula dancer can receive in the dance. The competition hosts a group category, but the highlight of the competition is the solo bracket where dancers contend for the title of “Miss Aloha Hula.” Watch the video above to learn about the journey of a professional Hula dancer towards winning the title.
