Construction On New York's Floating Pier 55 Park Will Start Soon
The futuristic project should be done in three years.
British designer Thomas Heatherwick and landscape architect Mathews Nielsen first presented their vision for Pier 55, a floating park of the future, in November 2014, and its construction is now set to go underway this summer. Spanning 2.7 acres, the park will be elevated between Hudson River’s Pier 54 and Pier 56, 50 meters out from the Chelsea shoreline. The $130 million USD design will offer clear views of Manhattan’s and northern New Jersey’s skylines and abundant greenery in pathways and lawns — along with a music, dance, theater and art venue with a 700-seat amphitheater. The project is expected to be completed in 2019.
