'The Handmaiden' Official Trailer Is an Eerie Tale of Love and Lust
Chan-wook Park’s modern adaptation of Sarah Waters’ acclaimed novel, ‘Fingersmith.’
Following the story of an heiress who falls in love with a petty thief, Sarah Waters’ acclaimed 2002 novel Fingersmith weaves an intricate story of deception, love and lust. Completely transforming the narrative’s landscape (which originally takes place in Victorian Era Britain), visionary director Chan-wook Park’s The Handmaiden is an eerie adaptation that takes place in modern day South Korea. Filled with unsettling imagery and tense interactions between the characters, the film’s neurotic atmosphere is a stark contrast to the movie’s stunningly beautiful cinematography. Driving further into the complex narrative is a disconcerting score that seems to drill relentlessly into the viewer’s psyche. The Handmaiden is set to hit theaters on October 5, 2016.
