Grace Wales Bonner Wins 2016 LVMH Prize For Her Menswear Designs
The British-Jamaican designer is en route to menswear stardom.
Breakout menswear designer Grace Wales Bonner just won the 2016 LVMH Prize — she’s the first Menswear designer to do so. Her gender fluid clothes are rich in narrative — representations of black male sexuality and identity reign throughout. She was chosen the winner by jury members Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo and Nicolas Ghesquiére.
Her competitors were Aalto, by Tuomas Merikoski; Alyx, by Matthew Williams; Brandon Maxwell; Facetasm, by Hiromichi Ochiai; Koché by Christelle Kocher; Vejas, by Vejas Kruszewski; and Y/Project by Glenn Martens. Ms. Wales Bonner will receive a grant of $335,000 USD plus coaching and mentorship from LVMH executives. Congrats to the young designer.
