Antonio Banderas Will Star as Gianni Versace in an Upcoming Biopic
Following the life of the famed Italian designer up to his untimely murder in 1997.
Hollywood star Antonio Banderas has been cast to play the role of Gianni Versace in a forthcoming film about the Italian fashion house. Given that the actor has been enrolled in Central Saint Martins’ MA Fashion course since last year, and just launched his collaborative collection with Scandinavian fashion label Selected, Banderas seems to be an apt candidate to star as the legendary designer.
Directed by Billie August (The House of Spirits), the movie will reportedly start filming this December in Milan. Production will also take place at Southern Italian city Reggio Calabria, where Gianni Versace was born. Lastly, the crew will travel to Miami, where the designer was murdered by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in 1997. However, according to WWD, Versace “has neither authorised nor had any involvement whatsoever” in the movie. A representative from the brand has also stated that “the movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.” Stay tuned for more updates as film production develops.
