Following the petition started by Nick Nicholson, New York City will officially honor the memory of Bill Cunningham by renaming the intersection of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue “Bill Cunningham Corner.” The commemorative ceremony will take place on Wednesday, July 6 at 12:30 p.m. EST, observed by Alicia Glen, a deputy mayor of New York; Harold Koda, the former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute; and Dean Baquet, the executive editor of The New York Times.
The renaming, however, is only temporary due to the complicated legislative process to permanently rename a street. Yet, the mayor’s office is considering other more lasting ways to honor Mr Cunningham. Mayor Bill de Blasio expressed in a statement, “Bill Cunningham turned our sidewalks into runways and New Yorkers into models. His vivid photos captured our city’s diversity in every sense of the word, and helped define New York as the fashion capital of the world.”
