Roxane Gay Will Be the First Black Woman to Pen a Marvel Comic

Along with poet Yona Harvey, the female duo will breaking ground with new series, ‘World of Wakanda.’

Marvel is reported to be releasing a new companion series to Black Panther. Entitled World of Wakanda, the new comic is set to be written by a pair of female writers, including author Roxane Gay (Bad Feminist) and poet Yona Harvey. The all-new story centers around the couple Ayo and Aneka, who are both former members of Black Panther’s female security force. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Gay speaks of her excitement for her upcoming assignment: “My agent was not thrilled that I was taking on another project … It’s the most bizarre thing I’ve ever done, and I mean that in the best possible way.” As the first black woman to write a Marvel comic, Gay also discussed the significance of the project: ”The opportunity to write black women and queer black women into the Marvel universe, there’s no saying no to that.”

Stay tuned for updates as World of Wakanda is scheduled to be released in November 2016.
