Nike Officially Introduces Air Max 1 Ultra Flyknit
Technology advances the iconic silhouette three decades later.
The Air Max 1 first made its debut in 1987 before becoming one of Nike’s most popular shoe to date — hence Air Max Day. Since then, updated prototypes have been introduced over the years, but nearly three decades later the Swoosh is introducing the silhouette’s most transformative yet: the Air Max 1 Ultra Flyknit. Nike’s project lead and footwear designer Ben Yun oversaw the creation of the new edition, replacing Tinker Hatfield’s original suede and mesh construction with a Flyknit upper. The result is the most comfortable and lightweight sneaker in the iconic shoe’s family.
“I clearly have a strong affinity for the Air Max; however, it’s even more fun and amazing to watch our younger Design & Development teams operate,” explained Hatfield. “Design Innovation is picking up speed around here and a perfect example is through Flyknit. It’s getting lighter and more zoned for performance than I could ever have imagined.”
The Air Max 1, presented in its first red-and-white colorway above and all-green below, will be available via the Nike SNKRS App before going in-store and on NIKEiD July 28.
