Serena Williams Reciting "Still I Rise" Will Inspire the Heck out of You
Maya Angelou’s poem sets the perfect tone against her naysayers.
On July 11, Serena Williams earned her 22nd Grand Slam title, tying the record for the most majors with German tennis star Steffi Graf. The 34-year-old also leads any man or woman currently playing and continues to defend her title as Wimbledon champ, and with the wins she’s acquired during the span of a nearly 20-year career, Williams has secured her space as being one of the greatest American athletes of all time. As if none of that was inspiration enough, BBC Sport paid tribute to her achievements with a video in which she delivers a rendition of Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise.” A moving poem about triumph in the face of adversity, this is a perfectly eloquent response to naysayers who’ve criticized everything about her from her appearance to her sportsmanship.
