No One Expected 'The Woods' Trailer to Be a 'Blair Witch' Sequel
The trailer revealed at Comic-Con definitely caught horror fans off guard.
A trailer for Adam Wingard’s The Woods was released earlier this year, which teased found footage film that fans of the runaway horror hit V/H/S are sure to appreciate. Although the clip shows plenty of foreboding in the form of a camping trip that is clearly fated to go awry, little else was revealed about the plot. However, Comic-Con once again sends movie fans into a frenzy with the announcement that the forthcoming horror flick is in fact a sequel to the 1999 cult classic, The Blair Witch Project. Although the film was billed as The Woods throughout the convention, a screening finally unveiled the true title of the film, which is simply Blair Witch. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lionsgate executive Jason Constantine divulges why the team kept the sequel so tightly under wraps:
We live in an age where it’s harder and harder for a movie to be a genuine surprise for an audience, because of the internet, because of Twitter, because of all the discussions that can happen online. Sometimes, you want to embrace that for a movie, but we really felt, on this film, that it would be great if audiences could be genuinely surprised.
Wingard and longtime collaborator and writer Simon Barrett have received the seal of approval from the original team behind The Blair Witch Project, so fans of the original can be sure that the remake is in good hands. They have since developed the script, and produced the movie with extreme secrecy, which even extends to the crew and Lionsgate executives. Barrett explains, ““[With] V/H/S, V/H/S 2, and especially You’re Next, we wouldn’t even tell people that those movies existed until their premieres were announced. That was our way to make that a cool thing. In this era of social media, and of everyone hyping everything, we’ve always felt that is the right approach: give people less, don’t tell them exactly what it is, let them be surprised.” Actor James Allen McCune will be playing the brother of Heather Donohue, a character from the first film. You can watch the new trailer above but be forewarned, don’t watch this in the dark. Blair Witch is set to hit theaters September 16.
