Instagram has recently introduced a weeklong series that aims to showcase creative works by artists from around the world. Entitled “#FashionIllustrated,” the special series will be highlighting an artist each day. With the help of Instagram’s new Stories feature, the artists will be sharing their skills of sketching and painting silhouettes, faces, clothing and more with everyday users. Speaking of the social media platform’s first “how-to” series, Instagram’s fashion and arts community lead Kristen Joy Watts explains that it is delightful to see an emerging creative community online:
A whole generation of stars have built their careers on Instagram: new models, photographers, designers, and recently—fashion illustrators. It has been wonderful to see these artists grow and connect with others in the fashion community.
The series has kicked off with Seoul and Sydney-based illustrator Jaesuk Kim, who demonstrated how to design unique silhouettes using watercolor brush pens.
Watch how Kim creates his exquisitely glamorous gowns with water droplets below. Stay tuned for Instagram’s updates as more artists will be featured on the platform throughout the week.
Illustrator Jaesuk Kim (@jaesukkim) creates whimsical, swirling gowns for his imaginary muses — he calls them his “SusuGirls.” It always starts with a silhouette. “I add shapes, lines and textures spontaneously to create an abstract and fluid form to represent couture-like dresses,” Jaesuk, who splits his time between Seoul and Sydney, says. One of his favorite techniques involves a watercolor brush pen. “I squeeze water droplets from the brush, then watercolors are added onto these droplets.” Jaesuk urges other artists to never fear mistakes: “I think the beauty of watercolor is that even if you make a mistake, it somehow adds a special touch to it.” This story is part of our new series #FashionIllustrated, stories of artists from around the world who are using their imaginations to bring style to life.
