This Pro Female Skateboarder Believes That Women Can Carve out Their Own Space
“Skateboarding is supposed to be for everybody.”
The film industry is obviously not the only realm where gender gap exists. In a video produced by Great Big Story, professional female skateboarder Lacey Baker has expressed her views towards gender inequality within the skate industry. Baker has pointed out the huge discrepancy between what male skaters and female skaters can earn in skateboarding contests. For instance, while male skaters can get a $200,000 USD reward for coming first in the competition, their female counterparts can only make $30,000 even if their performance is just as good. As she strongly believes that the sport is “supposed to be for everybody,” Baker is hopeful that female skaters can eventually break the glass ceiling if they were to be true to themselves.
