Meet Stan Smith: The Man Behind Your Favorite adidas Sneaker
Time for some interesting sneaker history.
After the release of one rendition after another, the adidas Stan Smith is still one of today’s most beloved sneaker silhouettes. Now the question is, who is the tennis shoe actually named after? In 1965, adidas launched its first ever leather tennis shoe. While the sneaker resembles the look of the present Stan Smith model, it was actually branded as the Robert Haillet, the name of a stylish-looking tennis player at the time. When Haillet retired in 1971, Three Stripes approached Grand Slam champion Stan Smith to discuss the possibility of borrowing his name for the sneaker. Finally, in 1978, the now-iconic sneaker was renamed after Smith.
