HYPEBAE Editors' Style Guide: How to Wear Fanny Packs
See how we rock the most convenient and stylish bag this season.
2017 has brought back some of the best trends, from chunky sneakers to retro logo prints, there’s no doubt that fashion has gone full-circle. One piece that has made its way back, both on the streets and on the runways, is the fanny pack. Previously seen as a tacky accessory, the bag has turned into the must-have piece, with brands like Gucci, Alexander Wang and Louis Vuitton creating new renditions.
In this week’s “Editors’ Style Guide,” we’re tacking the trend head on, by showing you how we wear the biggest (and most convenient) trend right now.
Fanny packs are my everything. There isn’t a more convenient and stylish bag that you can rock on the daily, and the best part is that it fits all the essentials like phone, cardholder and a lipgloss.
I usually like my bag to be the focal point of my outfit, and Gucci’s Marmont Matelassé Leather Belt Bag ($1,050 USD) in bright red is the perfect statement piece. Juxtaposing the luxury fanny pack, I pair it with cozy sweatpants and a matching sweatshirt ($302 USD), both from YEEZY season 4 and 5 respectively. I always tuck my pants into a pair of eye-catching socks ($75 USD,) these ones are from the Vetements x Reebok collection and they have become staples in my closet, and they work perfectly with the Balenciaga Triple-S sneakers in “Cream.” To finish the look, I throw on a bold, red liquid lipstick from Giorgio Armani ($38 USD) and a pair of statement shades from Adam Selman x Le Specs, and I’m ready to go.
Thanks to the recent welcome of the fanny pack by luxury brands all across the board, the iterations of the dad-inspired accessory have been vibrant to say the least. As the perfect statement piece, the fanny pack has been a recurring sight all across the globe’s fashion week streetsnaps. If you’re looking to go hands-free this winter season, here’s how you can add the nostalgic item into your mix of high and low-brow style.
Starting with the Alexander Wang Black Leather Fanny Pack ($495 USD), sling the bag across a chunky grey sweater. For pants, opt for something tailored and sleek – these Babaton Cohen pants from Aritiza ($145 USD) should do the trick. On the footwear side of things, finish off the look with an ultra-luxe pair of Vetements Black & Gold Lighter Heel Boots ($1,420 USD). To complement the silver-tone hardware of the fanny pack, go with a pair of eye-catching earrings (₩68,00 KRW, approximately $62 USD) from Korean jewelry label, Monday Edition. For that final wind-kissed look, use Bobbi Brown’s Nourishing Lip Color in “Ballerina Pink” ($29 USD).
Fanny packs are given the mom-status with good reason. They’re all about convenience and when I have one hand on my dog’s leash and the other on my iPhone, I need not also be constantly pushing up my purse strap onto my shoulder.
My pick is a vintage Chanel quilted waist bag, recently popularized by one Kendall Jenner. Prices on eBay vary up to approximately $1500 USD. There’s no mom mood without corresponding trousers, so Vetements x Levi’s reworked denim ($1470 USD) – in an ode to Mrs. George – says “I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.” Then, there’s my everyday Air Force 1 and plain white Carhartt WIP T-shirt ($38 USD). To truly honor mom however, and my own personal obsession with Burberry at the moment, I top the look with its Vintage Check Gabardine Harrington Jacket ($1400 USD). Capped with the Adam Selman x Le Specs’ “The Last Lolita” sunglasses ($120 USD), and I’m done.
