Alongside Anna Wintour and the Costume Institute’s curator in charge Andrew Bolton, the designer unveiled a first look at the exhibit. Entitled “Rei Kawakubo/COMME des GARÇONS: Art of the In-Between,” the show will be the second exhibition that the the Costume Institute has ever presented on a living designer. “We’ve been courting Rei for years, so the timing is really about her finally feeling more comfortable working with a museum,” Bolton tells Vogue. “She was also very clear that this was not going to be a historical survey of her career, but rather something different.”
During a press conference in Paris, the designer presented five examples from the exhibit. All coming in red, the iconic pieces are lifted from COMME des GARÇONS’ archival collections spanning from Spring 1997 to Spring 2017.
