Take a Look at Aleali May's Insane Sneaker Collection
The Lil Yachty stylist took ‘Coveteur’ inside her closet.
The model and stylist opened up about her deep relationship with sneakers, that’s in part due to her uncle. She also called out Pharrell – “in his N.E.R.D. days where he was just wearing A Bathing Ape and sneakers looking super dope” – and Kanye West – “he had this shark hoodie that zipped all the way up but he would have sneakers and Louis Vuitton with it” – as her early inspiration.
Take a closer look at her collection and catch an excerpt below. Then head to Coveteur to read more.
On her go-to sneaker:
“Always my favorite pair are going to be Jordan 1’s but currently I’ve been wearing—I always put the current sneakers in my rotation next to my door because I wear them so much and right now, the only pair are the Rick Owens sneakers—the Geobasket sneaker. First of all, it can go with anything. It is just so simple and I love high-top sneakers. It still has that high-fashion vibe but still ‘we have to run errands today’ but we also want to look cool. It plays on all of that.”
On the fragment design x Air Jordan 1:
“Within a span of a couple of years, I really loved the Fragment x Air Jordan 1. The Royal 1 is my favorite shoe and what [Hiroshi Fujiwara] did with the Fragment, just that touch of blue in the back. Even the Fragment design, it’s not like he just plasters his name all over it, it is literally like a circle with two lightning bolts. It is so simple. For him to make it so wearable, yet so different, yet still coincides with the story of Jordan’s, the tie in was perfect.”
On styling Lil Yachty:
“My new client is Lil Yachty. I have been styling him and it’s really fun because he’s so fun to be around, he has this youthful spirit. Like, I am never going to get old. It is a boost of energy and really refreshing, too. All of his concepts are so great and original, just really good.”
On her love/hate relationship with pink:
“Hot pink used to be my favorite color when I was a young girl and then I hated hot pink. I go through these where I am like, ‘I hate you. I love you. I hate you. I love you.’ Right now, I am back on pink. It is funny, I also saw on Vogue Runway, they were like, ‘Millennial pink is the new color.’ I was like, ‘okay, amazing, I can go ham.’”
On where to shop in Los Angeles:
“I love to shop at Acne, their store is so cool here downtown [L.A.]. I love to shop at H. Lorenzo, Maxfield—Maxfield has been doing these amazing pop-ups, they are really next level, like the Fear of God pop-up, the Off-White pop-up. They are doing a KITH pop-up right now. It is crazy because it is kind playing off my own natural style—high-end and street wear. There are so many stores coming out to L.A., there are so many people moving out to L.A., I feel like it is the next wave. I am kind of glad I moved home. I am really excited for the future of fashion in L.A. Of course, I have my classics. I got to La Brea, I go to Union, I go to Undefeated to get my sneakers. I go to Round Two, which is actually a great store. They sell old Bape, old Supreme, old Jordan’s. It is growing so much.”
