HYPEBAE Goes Behind-the-Scenes at Naomi Scott's "Past Lover" Shoot
Take a closer look at the editorial via this exclusive video.
When Naomi Scott first walked through the doors of Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset, she greeted everyone with a smile and warm embrace. Her vivacious energy set the tone for what was a carefree morning shoot at a charming, vintage-Hollywood food destination.
The shoot’s story, “Past Lover” served as a bridge, uniting the soft, self-aware ambience of her 2016 EP Promises, with her upcoming body of work. The link between Promises’ pensive mood, and the overarching theme of love in her follow-up project is personified by Naomi’s vacant gaze, as she is portrayed suggestively reflecting on a past love. Visually, Mel’s Drive-In offered a setting that fit perfectly with not only the shoot’s vibe, but Naomi’s current creative mindset, which is guiding the art direction of her new music. The staple California chain is renowned for its alluring “showbiz magic,” which has led to countless pop culture moments over the course of its 70-year legacy. Seemingly stuck in the ’80s, Mel’s old-school, neo-noir atmosphere created the intimate lens through which we captured Naomi. A memorable moment was when we were aligning on the shoot vision, and I gave the “stern” command that there will be no smiling. Naomi sarcastically replied, “Oh, I did enough of that for Disney.”
