Our Five Favorite Instagram Accounts This Week: The Runway Makeup Artists
Meet the MUAs making magic behind-the-scenes.
With fashion season well underway, all eyes are on the designers and models who are showcasing next season’s wares in New York, London, Milan and Paris. But fashion week is about more than just the clothes and the people wearing them – a lot goes on behind-the-scenes, so we are now shining the spotlight on another element of the creative team, the makeup artists.
Preparing and executing cutting-edge beauty looks on multiple models in limited time and space is no mean feat, but these artists are pushing boundaries and their creativity to the limit, both on and off the runway. Check out the feeds below for glossy editorials, slick runway looks and a peek at the process backstage.
Bio: “Beauty Exec.”
Favorite Caption: “When a model tells you not to touch their face.”
HYPEBAE Pick: Isamaya French is without a doubt, one of the wildest, wackiest and most talented makeup artists out there right now. She started her career as a face-painter and developed that artistic touch into a highly creative approach to beauty that’s seen her lead the makeup teams for KENZO and Moschino, among others. She’s also produced work for the likes of Vogue, W and made over Rihanna for that bodega-themed editorial in Paper.
Bio: “lottie – makeup artist”
Favorite Caption: ”Had so much fun coloring outside the lines.”
HYPEBAE Pick: Bicoastal makeup artist Lottie Stannard has lent her playful-yet-polished approach to the pages of Nylon and Teen Vogue while counting the likes of Calvin Klein and KENZO as clients too. The self-taught artist has amassed a huge following online, led shows for Stella McCartney and Cynthia Rowley, and painted the beautiful faces of Halsey and Solange.
Bio: “Makeup Artist”
Favorite Caption: “Would you get these eyebrows as a permanent tattoo for 1 full year for $25,000?”
HYPEBAE Pick: Hung Vanngo has 688K followers on Instagram, and it’s easy to see why. Not only does he regularly work with high-profile celebrities like Selena Gomez and Katy Perry, but his editorial work has been published in LOVE, Vogue and Elle.
Hung’s work usually errs towards the glamorous side, but his recent stint leading the beauty team for Matty Bovan’s show during LFW allowed him to really put his experimental side into practice. Peep his ‘gram for a BTS cameos from Emily, Gigi, Bella and the Victoria’s Secret girls.
Bio: “Diane Kendal”
Favorite Caption: “Another blue moment”
HYPEBAE Pick: Diane Kendal is basically an industry legend who’s been running the makeup game for nearly four decades. She’s worked with the biggest and best names, but is constantly experimenting and developing innovative new looks that make her one of the most in-demand artists today. Just this year, she’s worked on shows for Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Carolina Herrera. Browse through her feed to see a real-life maverick at work.
Bio: “Inge Grognard”
Favrite Caption: “Sunday, lazy Sunday”
HYPEBAE Pick: This Belgian makeup artist was one of just eight who made it onto the prized BoF 500 list – alongside Isamaya – and much like Diana, is somewhat of an industry veteran. She collaborated with the Antwerp Six before they even graduated. Known for her inventive and original aesthetic, Inge has worked with Emilio Pucci, Haider Ackermann and Hood by Air. She’s also Demna Gvasalia’s preferred MUA, having worked with both Balenciaga and Vetements for multiple seasons. Inge recently graced the front cover of DUST magazine too, proving that this industry veteran shows no signs of slowing down.
