London-based designer Ryan LO has quickly become known for his colorful and quirky approach to fashion – just last season, he collaborated with none other than the queen of kawaii, Hello Kitty. This time around, the designer swapped his penchant for vivid colors for a muted palette of black, white and subtle pastels.
Inspired by the Korean soap opera, Stairway to Heaven, as well as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth and his own recent British citizenship, Ryan presented a collection of show-stopping dresses – literally fit for a queen – in an array of opulent, monochromatic chiffon and tulle, embellished with pearls throughout. Alongside this were elegant pussy-bow blouses, trench coats and oversized hoodies – all given a touch of Ryan LO whimsy with layers of sculpted tulle and jacquard detailing. Accessorizing was also a key element, and the looks were given additional depth with Alice-in-Wonderland style millinery by Stephen Jones, elbow-length lace gloves and let’s not forget those stomp-worthy Dr. Martens that accompanied each outfit. The location too added to the overall narrative, with Ryan opting for a 1600’s church in central London for his “wedding” themed show.
Backstage is where the magic truly happened though, as Isamaya Ffrench applied fairytale pastel pink glitter across the lids and elongated lashes to complement the subtle doll-like makeup and legendary hairstylist Sam McKnight created princess-perfect loose curls topped off with beautifully girly ribbon bows. HYPEBAE managed to get a sneak peek backstage before the show and watch these artisans bring Ryan’s vision to life – scroll through the gallery above to see for yourself.
