Here Are All of IKEA's Upcoming Collaborations

LEGO, Byredo and more.

Swedish furniture giant IKEA has just revealed its collaboration with Off-White™ designer Virgil Abloh, and at the brand’s event in Älmhult, more upcoming collaborations were revealed. From joint projects with Solange‘s brand Saint Heron, to playful capsules with LEGO – there’s nothing the Swedish titan isn’t tapping into this year.

“We have a lot in common. Play is essential for kids, and we want to enable more opportunities for play in the home with kids and parents, ” said Lena Dixen, Senior Vice President of Product Development at the LEGO Group on the collaboration. Although the company has previously released homeware products, this will mark the first time the Danish company has worked on a design collection this big. “It’s very important to reach as many children as possible with the LEGO experience, because it really allows kids to be creative,” she added.

IKEA also revealed that they have a project with fellow Swedish fragrance company Byredo in the works, Ben Gorham the founder of the perfume house spoke on the importance of smell, “It’s a very relevant part of the home, that creates a sense of comfort and security.” He also added that the collaboration will be much more accessible than his usual releases. “People can afford the products. Unfortunately that’s not always the case with Byredo because of the nature of the product, so that ended up being one of the pillars for this project. It created a completely different framework in terms of budgets and even the scents. The idea of creating smells that will relate to so many people meant we also had to change our perspective.” Titled OSYNLIG, the Swedish word for invisible, the collection is set to release in 2020.

Perhaps one of the most exciting collaborations is with sportswear giant adidas. “We were just trying to understand the barriers to people participating in sport and really looked at the home as an emerging opportunity particularly for people in busy cities. To understand how we can get people working out more, doing more sport by integrating that more into their home life versus having to go out to the gym. And that’s how the conversation started, we were really trying to understand the opportunity, particularly about women, but also everyone. It was a mutual thing where we were talking about another topic and we thought maybe we can actually work together. And explore this opportunity of sport and the home,” said adidas’ Senior Director to HYPEBEAST.

HYPEBEAST also got to chat with adidas VP of design style Josefine Aberg and senior director of women about the promising collab. On how the opportunity got started, Allison, senior director says, “We were just trying to understand the barriers to people participating in sport and really looked at the home as an emerging opportunity particularly for people in busy cities. To understand how we can get people working out more, doing more sport by integrating that more into their home life versus having to go out to the gym.
