Instagram Confirms Plans to Launch Reels, Direct TikTok Rival
The viral video platform was recently banned in India.
Following the news that TikTok is now blocked in India, Instagram has confirmed that it is preparing to launch a direct competitor dubbed Reels. The social media giant is set to introduce the new feature on its platform in the U.S. in early August.
Already tested in Brazil, France and Germany and launched recently in India, Reels will be arriving in more than 50 countries in the coming months. “The community in our test countries has shown so much creativity in short-form video, and we’ve heard from creators and people around the world that they’re eager to get started as well,” a Facebook representative commented, according to TechCrunch.
Just like TikTok, the new Reels feature will be designed specifically for uploading short-form content. Users will be able to film videos with background audio, along with similar editing tools such as adjusting the footage speed.
