From Dark Academia To Secondhand Fashion, the Gen Z Trends to Watch in 2022
Instagram’s first trend report predicts what will be cool in the new year.
Social media giant Instagram drops its first trend report, predicting what will take over the internet in 2022. The comprehensive guide provides insight into the latest music, beauty and fashion movements that have captured the attention of Gen Z teens.
Wearing what you want remains high on the trend list as nearly half of teens and young adults reported that they would be leaning into niche trends in the new year, like nostalgia-core and dark academia.
With a rising social consciousness and awareness of fashion’s environmental impact, young consumers are shifting towards buying garments secondhand from thrifting platforms like Depop and Poshmark.
Unsurprisingly, clean beauty is also here to stay. As we see more diverse representations of beauty, emphasizing natural features through minimal makeup and fresh skincare is key. 13 to 24-year-olds care more about what they put on their bodies and gravitate towards safer ingredients, for themselves and the planet.
Social justice also topped Instagram’s trends. After 2020 caused a nationwide racial reckoning, many influencers are using their platforms to continue the conversation and spur action out in the real world.
