Jamie Lee Curtis Finally Explains Why She Returned for the Final 'Halloween' Reboot Trilogy
It’s actually all thanks to her godson, Jake Gyllenhaal.
From an outsider’s perspective, it may seem like Jamie Lee Curtis can’t get enough of Michael Myers and Halloween movies. However, she was actually set on being done with the films until a new opportunity presented itself, thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal.
Curtis initially starred in the horror films as Laurie Strode from 1978 to 2002. Then, in 2017, it was suddenly announced that she would be starring in a new Halloween film, which was then released in 2018.
“It wasn’t even a thought in my head to do another Halloween movie,” she told NME in a new interview. “I didn’t want to, but then I got a call from Jake Gyllenhaal, my godson, who I’ve known since he was a little boy. Jake had worked with [director] David Gordon Green [on acclaimed drama Stronger] and he said David wanted to speak to me. So I told him to pass my number along and the phone rang again just a minute later.”
During their chat, Curtis made it clear she wouldn’t agree to anything until she read the script, which she ended up loving because of its “more emotional brand of filmmaking struck a chord.” That was enough for Curtis to change her mind and want to give the film a go, which eventually got picked up for two more chapters, marking this recent and final trilogy. “David had hidden an indie drama in the middle of a horror film,” she explained. “He made something intimate that was layered in bloody tissue and exploding heads. I read it in about an hour and called him back immediately: ‘OK, let’s go.’”
She continued, “There was no mention of a trilogy when we started in 2018. I didn’t think I would do it ever again. Later, David mentioned that there were these three stories: Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. And here we are.”
So far, Curtis has made nine appearances in the Halloween films, with the 2018 installment having “the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film with a female lead over the age of 55 in history.”
Halloween Ends hits theaters and streams on Peacock starting October 14. Revisit the trailer above.
