MaisonCléo's Holiday Capsule Comes Under Fire for Cultural Appropriation
Another brand bites the dust.
It seems like brands are falling out of favor left and right as MaisonCléo is the latest to find itself in the eye of a social media storm. The France-based brand, which is known for using deadstock materials to create its made-to-order garments, gave their over 130k Instagram followers a sneak peek at its upcoming holiday capsule, which featured a dress made in the style of traditional Chinese attire.
While the piece in question was modified with a cropped hemline and hip-baring slit, many called out the collection for cultural appropriation. Within hours, MaisonCléo shut down any attempt at a dialogue as comments were disabled as several would-be customers allegedly attacked the model and insulted the founder for the design choices.
The updated caption reads, “Turned off the comments as [they] became racist with the “racism” word employed and some went with insults towards the model as well. This has certainly nothing to do on this kind place and not allowed and that I can’t support. Discussion = ok. Insults = no. Thank you.”
While it seems to be an oversight rather than intentional appropriation, MaisonCléo has yet to make any additional statements on the matter, leaving many to wonder if they hold themselves accountable or modify the holiday capsule, which is scheduled to be released on November 30.
