NOW Gallery's 'Human Stories 2023' Captures Young South Africa's Creative Pulse
A group show celebrating the creative agency, identity and political articulation of South Africa’s young generation.
NOW Gallery, situated in London’s Greenwich Peninsula, is gearing up to reveal its much-anticipated Human Stories exhibition series this October. The 2023 edition will focus on South African photography, featuring the works of six talented photographers. The exhibition offers a visual journey through South Africa’s complex and diverse cultural landscape, capturing the essence of its people, identity and spirit.
Bee Diamondhead, Fede Kortez, Aart Verrips, Nikki Zakkas, Anita Hlazo, Ben Moyo and Karabo Mooki will be the featured artists, each bringing a unique perspective to portray the country’s rich and dynamic cultural tapestry. Hlazo’s “Afro Grunge” transports viewers to Nyanga, Cape Town, capturing the evolving style and identity of Black “Alternative” presenting girls. Meanwhile, Mooki’s “Island Gals” documents the vibrant lives of a close-knit skateboarding community of Black women and Queer individuals in Johannesburg and Soweto.
Kortez’s “Cape Town Vibes” celebrates the vivid energy of Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap and Woodstock neighborhoods, while Zakkas co-creates narratives with her subjects, showcasing a diverse cast of young people within significant environments. Besides, Diamondhead’s “Back to the Soil” challenges cultural stereotypes in the South African music industry, and Verrips reimagines the nation’s identity through self-expression in “For My Liewe Land.”
The Human Stories 2023 showcase, titled A Young South Africa, will be on display from October 11 to November 19 at NOW Gallery.
