Are Second Chances Worth the Hype? Maya Jama and Stormzy Make a Case...
Dating experts weigh in on “spinning the block.”
In the spirit of Venus retrograde – oh and Mercury, too – former celebrity couple Maya Jama and Stormzy have seemingly rekindled their relationship. If you aren’t keen, Jama and Stormzy split due to rumors of cheating with musician Jorja Smith. Shortly thereafter, Jama removed any sign of Stormzy from her social media, a true sign of trouble at home. Stormzy even released an album featuring the song “Lessons,” hinting at their fallout. Given all of the drama, the pair rekindling is rather layered. However, according to experts, rekindling isn’t always a sign of toxicity.
In the world of dating, “spinning the block,” or returning to your ex is so common that there are a number of terms for it. For example, “backsliding,” “second chancing” and even, “thawing.” In the case of Jama and Stormzy, thawing best applies as it refers to getting back together with someone you once put on ice. In the case of thawing, Jama reopened that door for a former beau she quite literally deleted out of her life. But is it healthy?
According to Match.com experts, thawing isn’t just a toxic, Mercury Retrograde-fueled idea to run back to a toxic ex. It’s about increased empathy and understanding that the timing may not have been right before. It’s important to hold space for “a new version of your relationship to occur,” as counselor Susan Zinn shared.
Dating expert Callisto Adams recommends reflecting on the first try at love, before fully investing in a new future with them. Reflect on why the relationship ended, and how you both have grown since. With this new growth, is a new, more fulfilling romantic experience likely? “By asking yourself how you’ve both changed, you may be able to predict how the relationship will change, too,” Adams closed.
So, in the case of Jama and Stormzy, this might be one instance of spinning the block that’s absolutely worth it.
