What Fashion Consumers Really Want From Body Inclusivity

A report that explores what fashion reveals about how we see, value and design for the body today.

Body representation, inclusivity, diversity: in 2026, the language of progress doesn’t tell the full story. Fashion is no longer just competing to look inclusive; it’s competing against a decade of its own promises, replayed back to an audience that’s watching closer than ever.

The Body Issue, powered by Hypebae and Hypemind, examines what fashion reveals about how we see, value and design for the body today. Drawing on a decade of Hypebae fashion coverage, a survey of 400+ global Hypebae readers and expert interviews spanning styling, casting, design and material research, the dossier maps where fashion’s language around the body has evolved and where it might go next.

Brands get something rare here; a clear picture of where audience sentiment on body representation sits right now, what’s landing, what’s wearing thin and what fashion consumers really value.

Key Insights

  • Only 4% of respondents share positive words to describe fashion's relationship to their body. The rest reach for language like "difficult," "toxic," "disjointed" and "mismatched;" proof that the industry's messaging and its output have come apart.
  • The power to change fashion has moved to the brands too small to fake it. Readers trust independent designers and social media or creator culture over major fashion houses and regulation combined, 24% each against 11% and 8%.
  • The algorithm inherited fashion's narrow ideal and made it run faster. 78% of readers expect AI generated imagery to entrench the current standard further, either by optimizing bodies to perform for the algorithm or by perfecting the same narrow ideal, against just 5% who expect it to widen the range of bodies shown.
  • In a few years, the people running fashion's biggest houses will be the designers who refused to compromise. What they build small now is what they'll eventually be able to build large. The maisons are changing hands, and the body standard changes with them.
