How X-Pop Girl Group
XG Is Changing Music
Since launching in 2022, XG has taken the world by storm. Despite ranking No. 1 in the U.S. Billboard chart and being named one of Apple Music’s “Up Next” artists, XG’s seven members remain shrouded in mystery. So Hypebae invited XG into the studio for an exclusive interview and fashion shoot, pulling back the veil on the next big artist you will want to know absolutely everything about.
XG – “Xtraordinary Girls” – first came onto the scene in March 2022. The Japanese-born, Korea-based girl group were signed to XGALX, a global entertainment production company and music label founded to “Create Bold Culture”. Setting themselves apart from other girlbands, XG’s style has been dubbed “X-Pop”, A neo-genre that combines elements of both K-pop and J-pop, creating hybrid beats as edgy as they are catchy, defying expectations of what an Asian girl group sounds like.
Take their rap hit “GALZ XYPHER”, for example. Switching seamlessly between Japanese, English, and Korean, the video was watched over 11 million times on TikTok in the first month of release alone. Their sound and aesthetic is self-empowering, defined by a unique fashion sense and dynamic music videos embody their confidence and individuality. Combined with the dance and performance training, plus lyrics that hop between Japanese, English and Korean, their music transcends borders and has proven particularly popular among Gen Z.
American rapper J.I.D, who produced an original track for XG’s COCONA, is also a fan. His remix of “LEFT RIGHT” incorporated the vocals of R&B legend Ciara and the Hong Kong rapper Jackson Wang, further boosting XG’s international clout.
In the summer of 2023, XG broke America, headlining the “Head In The Cloud” music festivals in Los Angeles and New York. These may have been their first performances in the United States, but they clearly already have a dedicated fanbase. An audience of 15,000 strong sing along, as online videos of their performances show.
Most recently, Apple Music named XG as one of its “Up Next” artists; the first Japanese act to make the list, no less. The Up Next program aims to unearth up-and-coming talent, and has previously celebrated the likes of Billie Eilish, Daniel Caesar, Bad Bunny and Ice Spice. The group also have their own documentary series, XTRA XTRA, which gives a behind-the-scenes insight into the band and on YouTube.

As the lyrics in “GRL GVNG” from their debut mini album NEW DNA, out now, says: “There’s no limit, nothing that we can't do”. So buckle up: this is XG’s world now. Read on for exclusive interviews with all seven of XG’s mysterious members.

INTERVIEW
🔮 What were your initial thoughts upon hearing about the XGALX audition? And what motivated you to get involved?
—————I was 14 years old when I first learned about the audition. At that time, I was also pursuing snowboarding and contemplating my future, but the audition was exactly what I had always wanted: to be part of a girl group aiming for global success. I felt like it was my destiny, and there was no other option but to give it my all.
🔮 After the audition you underwent extensive training (it’s customary for idols and pop stars in Asia to undergo performance training for years before debuting to the public). What was it like shuttling between Korea and Japan?
—————There were moments, but I don't remember it being excessively difficult. It was an incredibly enjoyable time, and each day felt vibrant and full of life. I remember watching movies together after practice, staying up late in the dormitory, occasionally skipping practice to have karaoke sessions in the studio, and staying up talking until morning.Saying goodbye to the members I had worked so hard with was tough though.

—————I have always had a passion for dancing and have been a fan of POP and R&B music. I admired artists from afar, but my shy nature prevented me from sharing this with others. 🔮 That must have been a real leap of faith. How did you find training?
—————I have many happy memories from that time: the practice sessions, the time spent together in the dorm, the late-night conversations with everyone. Each day was filled with such happiness and cherished memories.

Parting ways with the members I had spent so much time with was hard though. Those moments fueled my determination to become a globally recognized artist – not just for myself, but also for the members who had left.
🔮 What motivates you most?
—————At the beginning, I had a fierce survival mindset, determined not to be defeated and refusing to let it end there. However, as I spent more time with everyone, our sense of camaraderie and team spirit grew stronger. We began to think, "We want to achieve our dreams together!" "We want to share our music with the world!" "We can overcome any challenges because we have each other."

BEHIND
THE SCENES
INTERVIEW
🔮 What sort of message would you like to convey to the people across the globe through XG’s music?
—————I aim to bring energy and positivity, first and foremost. Music has the power to uplift my spirits and make my day even happier. It adds vibrancy to each moment, coloring it in a beautiful way. If our music can evoke similar feelings in people, it would bring me immense joy. I also want to convey the message that there are no limits. We are Japanese, but we want to be big in Korea, America, and all around the world. We firmly believe that by witnessing our journey, everyone who supports us can share in that sense of hope and find courage to take on new challenges.
🔮 Your rapping skills really set XG apart. When did you start rapping?
—————I started rapping when I was around 13. At first, it was out of curiosity like, "Wow, this is cool!" But the more I learned about it, the more I loved it. Since we mostly sing in English, I have been continuously learning and improving my pronunciation. Someday, I would love to try making rap music in Japanese, too!
🔮 Tell me about your fashion. How would you describe your style and are there any artists that inspire you??
—————I absolutely love vintage fashion. Besides the environmental reasons, I really appreciate the unique charm that comes with it. I follow a "no rules" approach when it comes to dressing, but I draw inspiration from the likes ofTLC, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, Aaliyah and Lady Gaga.
🔮 What about musically? Who are you currently listening to?
—————My music tastes have definitely been influenced by artists like TLC and Destiny's Child. A song that recently had a big impact on me is "CUT" by Tori Kelly. It has a bit of a ‘90s sound, mixed with a modern touch, and I really love that nostalgic yet current vibe. I'm also really into Ice Spice and KAYTRANADA, who I’d love to collaborate with.
🔮 What are you like as a leader?
—————I constantly reflect on the kind of leader I want to be and the qualities that would benefit XG. Creating a positive atmosphere and vibe is a priority, because I believe that the higher the energy and vibe of everyone, the better the quality of our performances. Communication is also crucial for our team, especially with seven members. It's important to understand and respect every member’s values and perspectives. It is my job as a leader to find ways to unite everyone.
INTERVIEW
Some nights, we even played games until the next afternoon! Bidding farewell to the members we had worked hard with was always hard though. Our mutual support fostered a positive mindset of helping each other achieve our dreams.
🔮 Looking back on your journey from audition to now, how would you say you have grown?
—————I’ve really come to understand how important life experience is. Training to be a member of XG goes way beyond just dance and singing skills. I studied everything from manners to punctuality. I think that being an artist means more than just showcasing talent through singing and dancing; it’s also about growth, and becoming the kind of person I can be proud of.
🔮 What was it like collaborating with top global artists, like choreographer Sienna Lalau and Ciara and Jackson Wang for “LEFT RIGHT”?
—————It was truly a dream collaboration! I still can't believe that we had the opportunity to collaborate with artists and dancers whom we have admired for so long. It fills me with a tremendous sense of honor and gratitude.
🔮 Tell me about your style and how you approach fashion.
—————I enjoy experimenting with different styles, rather than limiting myself to what I think suits me. It varies day-to-day, and depends on my mood, but lately, I've been drawn to combining high fashion with more casual elements.
🔮 Which artist had a big impact on you musically? And who are you currently listening to?
—————Madonna, Beyoncé, and Rihanna have played a significant role in shaping my musicality. Currently, I am really into Olivia Rodrigo. I’m really looking forward to her new album.
INTERVIEW
This collective dream not only kept us motivated, but also deepened our bond as a team.
🔮 How would you say you have grown?
—————We learned the importance of personal growth and continuous learning early on. We were taught to learn from our mistakes, which has been invaluable in developing the ability to think independently. As a result, we were able to form a strong and unbreakable bond as a team.
※Which is also the name of the first track on XG’s new mini-album "NEW DNA," is a catchphrase used by XG members. It symbolizes the members’ connection through an invisible umbilical cord, representing the shared energy and purpose they have.
🔮 What sort of message would you like to convey to the people across the globe through XG’s music?
—————We want to instill courage, hope, and love to people all around the world through our music. As a group and as individuals, we aspire to become artists who are loved by people of all generations. We want to spread messages of self-love and encourage our fans to live in and enjoy the moment.
🔮 Who would you say is your biggest musical influence and who are you listening to now?
—————I’ve particularly been influenced by TLC and Avril Lavigne. I also really admire ZARD, a fellow Japanese artist. Recently, I have been captivated by Jenevieve, an artist whose chill vibes and R&B style align perfectly with my taste.
INTERVIEW
I am now filled with determination to give my all, even for the members who trained with us [but didn’t make the cut for the final group].
🔮 When did you start rapping?
—————I started rapping at the same time I started singing: when I was 13 years old. Before that, I didn't really listen to rap much, but I discovered its charm and got hooked.
🔮 Do you have a mantra or something you tell yourself before going on stage?
—————I believe that when you feel an abundance of happiness around you, the present moment becomes even more enjoyable - no matter how tough or difficult things may be. I always remind myself to enjoy the moment.
🔮 Tell me about your style and approach to fashion.
—————I mostly buy from select shops and vintage stores! I mainly get inspiration from ‘80s and early 2000s music videos. I really love cowgirl fashion, so I've been wearing Western boots a lot lately. I try to always incorporate at least one eye-catching color to my outfits.
🔮 What about musically, who inspires you?
—————I have been greatly influenced by artists like Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. When I first heard their songs as a child, my heart jumped and I got goosebumps. I hope that when people listen to XG's music, they can feel the same sensation I felt back then. Lately, I've been hooked on Doja Cat's song "Attention."
🔮 Could you elaborate on your relationship with your mother and the significance she holds in your life?
—————I've always had a great relationship with my mom; we’re almost like sisters! She inspires me and I've learned a lot about fashion and music from her. I really want to make this dream come true for her too.
INTERVIEW
🔮 What are your dreams both as XG and as an individual artist?
—————As XG, our collective dream is to spread courage, hope, and inspiration to people worldwide through our music. Additionally, we aspire to achieve prestigious awards, top the music charts, and embark on a nationwide tour. But the aim is to really spread the importance of self-love and avoiding comparison and external influence.
🔮 What about your style: how do you approach shopping and where do you find inspiration?
—————I use social media for research and take inspiration from fellow XG members, too.
🔮 Which artist would you say has had a big impact on you musically?
—————There are so many that it's hard to choose, but Destiny's Child would definitely be up there. One artist that I've been particularly interested in lately is British girl group FLO.
🔮 You’ve performed many covers, but which cover song were you particularly invested in?
—————My most cherished cover memory is associated with Christina Aguilera's "The Voice Within." I remember performing this song for the first time in sixth grade, and it having a profound impact on me.
INTERVIEW
Yet, even in the toughest moments, I maintained a positive outlook and cherished the time spent with my fellow members. Throughout this journey, the presence of my fellow members and, most importantly, my passion for music, served as constant sources of motivation, granting me the strength to overcome challenges.
🔮 When did you start rapping?
—————I began rapping in earnest when I became a trainee at XGALX. However, even before that, I had always been interested in it and often hummed to upbeat rap tunes. Learning how to rap presented many challenges. I had to figure out my own style and how to make the most of my strengths. Of course, I continue to study and research, always filled with a desire to discover the new me and take on new challenges.
🔮 What message would you like to convey to the people across the globe through XG’s music? Moreover, what are your dreams both as XG and as an individual artist?
—————Always love and believe in yourself for who you are. And be yourself! I want to continuously share that positive energy and encourage everyone to enjoy each day to the fullest. We have so many dreams both as XG and as individuals, but our biggest goal is to become a source of love, hope, positive energy, and inspiration for all the people who support and believe in us.
🔮 Where do you get fashion inspiration from?
—————I don't have a specific brand that I like, but I enjoy shopping at select shops and vintage stores. I like many different styles and want to try out various looks, but I'm particularly fond of Y2K fashion right now. I draw inspiration from ‘90s styles and get a lot of ideas from streetwear fashion.
🔮 Any artist who inspire you musically?
—————I draw inspiration from many artists, but I particularly love Bruno Mars, Ne-Yo, TLC, and Destiny's Child.
INTERVIEW
🔮 How did you start rapping?
—————Initially, I began with singing, aged nine, but I found the deep tone of my voice to be quite appealing. My vocal teacher recommended that I give rapping a try. I really love the straightforwardness of rap. When I listen to other artists' rap, I always make sure to read the lyrics while listening. When I rap myself, how I can connect with the audience through my words.
🔮 What do you most love about music?
—————The limitless scope for expression. It's not just singing and dancing, although those are amazing too, but rap, in particular, gives me a sense of love and confidence in myself.
🔮 What message do you like to convey through XG’s music?
—————I want people to love and believe in themselves; treating themselves like treasures, no matter what. Remember, you shine at all times, and it's because everyone is different that they're wonderful.
🔮 How would you describe your style?
