Tumblr Announces Ban on Pornographic and Adult Content

Yes, you read that right.

Tumblr recently announced it will be permanently banning adult content on its platform starting on December 17. According to The Verge, the business move looks to erase porn-related communities from the site. The ban which is a part of Tumblr’s updated Community Guidelines will specifically target explicit sexual content and nudity.

Engadget reports that the blocked content will include “photos, videos or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples and any content that depicts sex acts.” Exceptions to the ban are illustrations and art that feature nudity, breastfeeding and after-birth photos. Additionally, erotica and “nudity related to a newsworthy event” and “nudity in art” will still be allowed.

In an official statement, Tumblr stated that after December 17, any explicit content will be flagged and removed from the platform. At the moment, users who have profiles which feature flagged content will be emailed that their content is slated to be unavailable. The Verge also reports that “posts with porn content will be set to private.”
