Regardless of the season, whenever I pay someone a compliment about how stunning their hair is, it seems like I always get the response, “Thanks, but my hair is actually really greasy.” While it may seem like greasy hair can look appealing when styled into a stylish bun or ponytail, the truth is that it can be a major issue at the roots and beneath the surface. This problem persists no matter the time of year, causing frustration for the girlies with the locks. (Not for my bald fade, thoughhhhh.)

If you have a genetic predisposition to produce excess sebum, there may be limited options to control it. However, there are many ways to make the overproduction of sebum in the hair manageable. It’s crucial to keep in mind that sebum is not your enemy but rather an essential component that plays a vital role in moisturizing and nourishing your hair; think of it as a friendly ally.

The Hypebae Beauty Team has put together a few tips and tricks to help you effectively manage excessive sebum production and combat the heavy feeling in your hair. Greasy hair, begone.

You CAN Wash Your Hair Daily

Washing your hair regularly is important for a healthy scalp. If you don’t wash your hair, oil and skin buildup can clog your hair follicles and cause hair loss or skin problems. People with thin hair can wash it every day, while those with wavy or curly hair can wait two to three days. Just make sure to use gentle shampoo that won’t hurt your skin. If you have oily hair, avoid shampoos that promise to make your hair smoother or shinier.

Invest In A Scalp Scrub or Scalp Facial

Scrubs and clay masks for the hair are great for removing dead cells, product residue and excess sebum that can become occlusive over time. Gentle exfoliation can also help active ingredients in shampoo and conditioner penetrate better into the scalp, making the actives work more effectively.

You Don’t Need Conditioner All Over Your Head

It’s best to only apply conditioner to the lengths of your hair. Using too much conditioner all over your hair can actually weigh it down, especially if you have fine hair.
