Britney Spears Slapped by San Antonio Spurs Security
Leave Britney alone.
This was not on our 2023 bingo card — Britney Spears was reportedly assaulted by the Director of San Antonio Security, Damian Smith.
The 2000s pop queen initially approached player Victor Wembanyama for a picture, tapping the athlete on the shoulder.” His security then allegedly backhanded the star in the middle of a Las Vegas restaurant. Spears took to Instagram to address the situation, writing, “Traumatic experiences are not new to me and I have had my fair share of them. I was not prepared for what happened to me last night,” she shares. “I am aware of the player’s statement where he mentions ‘I grabbed him from behind,’ but I simply tapped him on the shoulder. His security then backhanded me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd.”
While Wembanyama’s team have a duty to protect him, assaulting some as a knee-jerk response is incredibly reckless behavior for anyone in law enforcement as someone’s life could be lost to a security guard or police officer reacting with violence to an innocent bystander in the name of the “law.” Assessing and deescalation is what they are trained to do — or should be.
Spears continues, “I get swarmed by people all the time. In fact, that night, I was swarmed by a group of at least 20 fans. My security team didn’t hit any of them.” The Las Vegas Police Department’s public information officer issued a statement to USA Today, sharing that “at approximately 11 p.m., officers responded to a property in the 3700 block of Las Vegas Boulevard regarding a battery investigation,” but did not confirm whether the incident involved Spears. Although the incident was documented in a police report, no arrests or citations have been issued.
