Fred Perry's Akane Utsunomiya Collab Is a Blend of Japanese-British Aesthetics
Detail and heritage meet.
Japanese womenswear brand Akane Utsunomiya has collaborated with British designer Fred Perry on a capsule collection.
At first glance, the collection is an homage to classic British streetwear. We see a well-fitted polo with a medium sleeve next to a matching sweater in the same silhouette. A python printed tee is also in the collection, with hints of pattern also referenced on a track jacket. And finally, a pair of track pants that button at the ankle complete the full closet range.
What makes the collaboration exciting is that Akane Utsunomiya brings a Japanese flair that is not common in Fred Perry’s language. The sweatshirt and polo, for instance, are in “Cypress” green and orange, respectfully color-blocked. And the track jacket, of course, utilizes a typically non-sportswear associated color to accent the utility design. The entire collection is classic sportswear, without being cliche.
