Kanye West Loses Honorary Degree From School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Due to his many controversial and disrespectful remarks.
Controversial rapper Kanye West has lost his honorary degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which he was awarded back in 2015.
According to TMZ, SAIC’s president Elissa Tenny shared a letter which explained that West has “exhibited disturbing behaviors and made dangerous statements that do not align with our community values.” She continued to say that the rapper’s “anti-Black, antisemitic, and incendiary statements” are “disgusting and condemnable,” and that they have been “painful for our entire community.”
Tenny explained that the private art school grants honorary degrees to those who offer contributions to art and culture at that moment in time, and confirmed that West’s recent actions “do not align with SAIC’s mission and values.” The decision came about as a result of an online petition started by SAIC students, urging the school to rescind West’s degree. The petition resulted in it over 4,000 signatures and saw the Board of Governors meet to discuss the decision.
“This was a difficult decision to make, and one that has been deliberated thoroughly, Tenny wrote, adding that this marks the first time in the school’s 80-year history that a degree has been revoked. “Though we firmly believe in the right to express a diversity of opinions and beliefs, the severity of his behavior made it clear that rescinding this honor was appropriate,” the president continued.
West has yet to respond, but we can’t imagine that he’ll be best pleased.
