Cermonia's Babba C Rivera on Her Relationship With Red Lipstick as a Latina Woman
“Latina woman have been rocking red lipstick as a symbol of femininity and power for generations.”
Red lipstick has long been associated with power, confidence and femininity. When it comes to Latina women, red lipstick holds a special significance as it represents their vibrant culture and bold personalities. Latinas have a rich heritage rooted in diverse cultures and traditions and the choice to wear red lipstick is often seen as a celebration of their identity and a way to embrace their inner strength.
For Ceremonia founder, Babba C Rivera, red lipstick is not just a cosmetic choice but a symbol of empowerment. It is a way to reclaim space, challenge societal norms and break stereotypes. Red lipstick allows Latinas like Rivera to be unapologetically themselves and embrace their individuality.
Moreover, red lipstick has the ability to transcend language and cultural barriers. It is a universal language of confidence and self-expression. Latinas and women of color all over the world can connect through their love for red lipstick, forming a sense of unity and solidarity.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hypebae Beauty Team tapped Rivera for a chat to break down the significance of red lipstick to the Latina woman.
How did your relationship with red lipstick start?
BCR:My relationship with red lipstick started before I can remember. My mother was never big on makeup, but would turn to an iconic red lipstick as her secret weapon to elevate any look without the need for any additional makeup. I have many memories of seeing my mom apply a statement lip to go with her otherwise natural face, mixing a moisturized glowy skin with a powerful red lip. As a child, I would steal my mothers lipstick to play dress up and remember feeling so feminine. It was something all my tias and my own mother modeled as a statement of power and femininity that has really stuck with me.

As a Latina woman, what do you feel is the cultural significance of wearing red lipstick?
BCR:Cultural icons have worn red lips to signify power, femininity and confidence for generations. Seeing powerful figures like Frida Khalo and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as the women in my own family has created a special association with this statement beauty regimen for me.
What is your ultimate red lippie go-to?
BCR:I love the Jones Road Beauty‘s Ruby red lip tint. I love that it’s hydrating for the lips and completely clean formulated, and the shade feels like a modern take on the classic red lip. It’s more of an orange-y red, and I like that you can layer it for different levels of intensity. It almost feels like skincare for your lips!
