Lindsey Horan on All the Ways the Game Still Needs to Change

“There have been so many women before me who’ve paved the way for my journey and yet there’s more work to be done for the next generation.”

Amidst an eventful season filled with accomplishments, Lindsey Horan’s journey continues to thrive. With her recent transfer to Olympique Lyonnais, extending her stay in France until 2026, the experienced midfielder is now laser-focused on aiding the USWNT in their quest to defend their crown at the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup. Alongside her fellow 2019 World Cup champion, Alex Morgan, Horan has been entrusted the role of co-captaining the Stars and Stripes.

Just as the anticipation for the FIFA Women’s World Cup reaches its peak, we had the privilege of catching up with the adidas athlete. This exclusive interview delves into her unwavering dedication, passion and commitment to making a difference. As we explore her inspiring journey, we gain insights into how she is preparing to represent her country on the grandest stage of all once again.

Can you provide some insight into your personal background and journey, starting from the decision to skip college and enter the professional realm directly?

Playing professionally was a dream of mine from the beginning. I played and had success on the U.S. U-17 team and was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to play for the University of North Carolina. However, I also had an offer to play with Paris Saint-Germaine and I just knew in my heart that was the route I wanted to go, even if it wasn’t the status quo. I was ready for overseas competition; I felt my style of play was suited for the professional level. I won’t lie and say it was smooth sailing–I’ve been open about the impact it had on me, but it was what felt right for me at the time and it got me to where I am today, so I’m grateful.

As you enter the FIFA Women’s World Cup following another French league title, could you share your thoughts and level of confidence?

This U.S. Women’s National Team is an incredible group. There is so much depth of talent and unique skill sets that we believe will help us do what we set out to do–win. Despite the injuries impacting our roster, this group is ready for a run. We’re confident and enough of us have been through this before, so we’re all staying level-headed. There’s always pressure being a part of this team, but each player is stepping onto the pitch fighting for the player next to them, so with that mindset, we’ll be a tough team to beat.

Why do you believe it is crucial for you to use your voice and be active on social issues, such as the ongoing NWSL investigation and the USWNT’s pursuit of pay equity?

Fighting for what’s right is in the DNA of me and my teammates. There have been so many women before me who’ve paved the way for my journey and yet there’s more work to be done for the next generation.

Given your affiliation as an adidas athlete, what factors do you prioritize when selecting soccer equipment, particularly sneakers?

As a professional athlete, you learn to value the best technology, from the shoes you perform in to the apparel you train in and thankfully adidas has a lot of great options to support me. On the pitch, I really love the X boot. Off the pitch, I’ve really enjoyed my adidas Ultraboost Light and Gazelle Bold sneakers.
