Cortisa Star Fronts Converse and Vaquera's New Collaboration
Remixing the Chuck Taylor All Star in two classic colors.
Converse and Vaquera joined forces to turn a classic sneaker into the latest streetwear staple. The Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker is one of the most widely recognized shoes around the world, and one of the easiest to project a completely different brand identity onto. The Paris-based fashion label did exactly that, acting as the latest brand to elevate a Converse icon from an average shoe to a fashion grail.
For an All-Star revamp, what better person to make the face of the collab than a star herself? Rapper and model Cortisa Star answered the Converse x Vaquera call, fronting the campaign for the reconstructed sneaker. The shoes take the same sole and base design as the classic All Star in white and black, turning the silhouette into knee-high boots with slouchy, adjustable fabric.
The oversized upper is coated in synthetic waxed canvas: an interesting design technique that allows the sneakers to soften and patina with wear, almost in the same way leather bags do.
“We love to take something well-known like the Chuck and make it feel new,” said Vaquera co-founder Bryn Taubensee. “We kept a lot of the iconic elements of the Chuck but removed the laces and supersized the upper. The effect is something familiar while at the same time unknown and exciting.”
Vaquera follows in a line of designers who have previously collaborated with the footwear brand. JW Anderson and Comme des Garçons’ Converse debuts became street essentials after they hit the shelves. With a bold look taking the brand’s timeless style and mixing it with fashion capital flash, could Vaquera’s Converse be next on the list?
