Unboxing: Heineken®'s Amusing New Phone Case Quite Literally Flips Your Phone Over When You’re Out Socializing

“The Flipper” tackles social media distractions by flipping the phone face down when sensing the word “cheers.”

When on a night out, it’s easy to get distracted by social media notifications on our phones, which ultimately stop us from being present in the moment. To combat the issue of “phubbing” — short for phone snubbing — Heineken® has created a world-first anti-distraction gadget: “The Flipper” — a tongue-in-cheek phone case designed to show just why it’s better to get off your socials and enjoy connecting with others in the real world.

Helping people around the world to get #socialoffsocials, “The Flipper” features a robotic arm that flips the phone face down when sensing the word “cheers”. AI-trained to detect the word in a variety of ways, the device is clearly Heineken® having fun but speaks to a wider problem across the world.

Heineken® enlisted Swedish expert inventor Simone Giertz to test the device first — renowned for her humorous creations that aim to solve everyday problems. Speaking on the brand’s phone case, she says, “I’m trying to spend less time on my phone and more time socializing and so far my strategy has been ‘be really hard on myself’. But that evidently doesn’t work very well. So I love ‘The Flipper’ – it’s just a clever solution and a good reminder for me to not get distracted by social media when I’m trying to socialize.”

As part of its on-going commitment to staying off socials and having good times in real life, the beer brand’s latest device follows from last year’s collaboration with Bodega for “The Boring Phone” — a nostalgic flip phone that comes without the features that make the modern smartphone so distracting — championing being more present without the distractions of the digital world. The brand was also behind “The Closer”, a high-tech bottle opener that, when used to open a bottle of Heineken®, immediately shuts down work applications — offering a witty response to our “always-on” culture.
