Dieux Founder Breaks Down How the New US Tariffs Will Effect Beauty Brands

Charlotte Palermino gave the internet a simple and easy explanation.

As the U.S. government moves forward with imposing tariffs on imported goods, Americans are left questioning how these changes will impact their daily lives. Beauty enthusiast are also specifically worried about the fate of their makeup and skincare products.

Amid widespread confusion, we turned to the internet for answers and came across Dieux founder Charlotte Palermino, who shared a TikTok video breaking down what these changes could mean for the beauty industry.

Using an example from her past, she references attempting to make the brand’s bestselling “Instant Angel” moisturizer’s tube. When asking a company to create the tube with imagery, they gave her a quote of three months. When those three months were up, that same company could not complete the production of the packaging due to failing to find people to make the packaging. Doing her research, she found out that the tubes were actually made in China and the company was only decorating them in the United States.

Palmerino claims that in the U.S. employees of manufacturing companies are not paid a livable wage. In other counties where she sources materials (Italy and Spain), they are. Plus, they have the infrastructure to assemble and produce quickly — America does not. To create the factories, the government would like to produce American goods which requires investment. In skincare and makeup, there are thousands of touch points needed to create a final item and these are likely not made in the same country. Tariffs will increase the price of ingredients, packaging and more. The U.S. government will not foot the bill — the price of beauty items will likely increase, making the consumer the receiver of the cost.
