Lizzo's Makeup Artist Breaks Down Her Coachella Look & Shares Summer Beauty Tips

Recreate Alexx Mayo’s red-hot smoky eye.

Singer and rapper Lizzo hit the stage for weekend two of Coachella 2019 sporting a striking red bodysuit with a killer eyeshadow look to match. The man responsible for her stage makeup is Alexx Mayo who also shared his tips on recreating the red smoking eye. We got to catch up with Mayo to pick up a few summer beauty tips on how to keep your foundation in place and his current favorite beauty trends.

Read our quick interview below and peep the lineup of Urban Decay products used for Lizzo’s look.

Give us the breakdown on Lizzo’s look.

For the eyes, I started with Urban Decay’s Afterglow 8-Hour Blush in “Quiver” in the crease blown out onto the cheeks and under eye. I used the Urban Decay Naked Cherry palette, shades “Bang Bang” on the lid, “Young Love” on the outer 3/4, and “Privacy” on the outer corner brought into the crease. For the brows I used, Urban Decay’s Brow Blade in the shade “Dark Drapes” set with Urban Decay’s Brow Finish 24-Hour Gel.

On the cheeks I used the Afterglow in “Quiver” and “Privacy” eyeshadow from the Naked Cherry palette. I finished up with the brand’s 24/7 lip pencil in “714,” topped with Urban Decay Lo-Fi Lip Mousse in “Frequency.”

What’s the best way to prep someone’s face for a performance? How do you prevent your client from sweating makeup off?
The best way to prep skin for a performance is using a light weight moisturizer to hydrate the skin but not add any oil or shine AND a great long lasting primer. I love the Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer. It not only smoothes, but it also grabs your foundation and helps it stay put.

How does your technique change when you prep clients for outdoor versus indoor performances?
My technique for outdoor performances changes depending on weather, climate and time of day. Daylight photographs differently than flash for photos and video. I use minimal foundation or anything too heavy for complexion. I also like using a powder puff with translucent powder to leave a veil for any moisture or sweat to be absorbed.

Can you share a few tips for summer makeup application?
Summer makeup can be quick and easy. Find a product that has multiple benefits like sunscreen, hydration and light coverage. Let your skin glow and use highlighter in multiple ways, eyes lips and cheeks!

What are some of your new beauty and skincare favorites?
Microblading is such a huge trend right now, I love using the Urban Decay Brow Blade as a more affordable and alternative way to have realistic brow hair.
